Art Galleries

In the heart of the heart of Fredericksburg, woven into the tapestry of America’s most historic city, are eight art galleries and studios, each one a vibrant celebration of visual creativity. And on First Fridays for the past 30 years, the galleries have drawn thousands downtown to check out local art. First Friday participating art galleries include:

Art First Gallery – 834 Caroline Street

The Art First Gallery located, in the heart of Old Town Fredericksburg and founded in 1992, is Fredericksburg’s first established artists’ cooperative.

The city of Fredericksburg is home to many talented and motivated artists. The original founders of Art First envisioned a place where these artists could exhibit their work. At Art First Gallery one will find a wide range of art for every prospective collector, from fine arts in a traditional manner to contemporary, abstract works. Paintings as well as artist rendered prints, photography, ceramics, original paperworks, fine weaving, sculpture, jewelry and mixed media are represented.

For April First Friday:

Art First Gallery presents “Skies the Limit” featuring Artist Joel Simpson April 4 – 28th Art First Gallery, 824 Caroline Street, Fredericksburg, Virginia 22401, Opening Reception: First Friday, April 5, 6:00–9:00 pm  Display Dates: April 4-April 28, 2024,  Hours: Thursdays‒Sundays, 11:00 am–5:00 pm. Veteran Aeronautical Artist Joel Simpson returns as the Gallery’s featured presentation in April.  His work is technically correct but infused with the daring and acrobatic skills exhibited by all aviators as they rip through the skies.  And thus, the title of the exhibit:  “Skies the Limit”.   Indeed, the sky is the limit in Simpson’s work. “Aviation has always been a field where your skills and ambitions determine how high you could go.  In essence the skies were the limit,” Simpson explained recently of his driving philosophy in this exhibit.  Gallery visitors will be treated to the technical mastery of dog fights tearing across gun sights to more thought-provoking vignettes centered on the upper firmament.
